Joseph Zoboi, Founder & Instructor of The Rising Son Project facilitated a workshop during the summer from August 19th - 24th in the Flatbush Branch Library between the hours of 1-4pm. It serviced a total of 25 boys aged 5-17. Free pizza was offered as part of this initiative for participants.
The first day, the 19th, was a round table introduction to the project session. Here the boys exchanged and wrote down or drew ideas on what symbols they could use to represent the theme of "Our Story.” The boys were also introduced to the medium of tooling foil. On the 20th, there was a recap for those who missed the first day and we went over the reasons why we communicate. The boys were also introduced to the technique of embossing and rubbing. On the 21st, the boys continued work on their individual tooling foil pieces and were introduced to photographer and founder of Proud Poppas United, Tyrone Z. McCants, who gave an introductory lesson on photography as a tool for communication. On the 22nd and 23rd, the boys worked on the layout and assembly of the tooling foil quilt. On the final day of the 24th, there was a final workshop for fathers and sons. Their pieces were included in the final tooling foil quilt. The final piece was installed on the second floor facing the entrance of the Flatbush Branch Library.
