The How We Are Connected Photo Exploration Project

“Traditions may change in time, but movement is inherited."

The How We Are Connected Project (THWACPEP) is a multimedia journey into cultural identity through performance and tradition. Led by photographer and storyteller Tyrone Zire McCants, the project documents the artistry of cultural dancers, musicians, and performers, as well as cultural events, revealing the connections between communities and the traditions that unite them.

Through photography, film, and storytelling, THWACPEP preserves heritage, inspires cultural pride, and builds bridges across generations and geographies.

  • The project currently showcases theatrical portraits of over 100 cultural performers dressed in their traditional attire. The next phase will expand into documenting annual festivals and performances worldwide, beginning with artists and cultural traditions from various countries (Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Brazil, Burma, Burundi, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Hawaii, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Karen, Kenya, Lao, Madagascar, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, Netherlands, Nigeria, Panama, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Republic of Korea, Republic of Lithuania, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Trinidad, United Kingdom, and across United States.).

Through portraits, video features, interviews, and festival documentation, THWACPEP highlights the artistry of cultural performers while preserving their stories for future generations.

Audiences can explore categories such as Artists, Performers, Instrumentalists, Dancers, Singers, Performance Companies, and Events, creating a rich tapestry of cultural storytelling.

  • Growing up in the Bronx, one of the most ethnically diverse areas of New York City, I was surrounded by music, festivals, and traditions from around the world. These experiences shaped my understanding of culture and sparked my lifelong passion for storytelling through imagery.

As I developed my practice as a professional photographer in the performing arts, I began to see dance and cultural performance as more than entertainment—they are living archives. Every step, rhythm, and garment carries centuries of history, resilience, and identity. These traditions connect us across continents and generations, speaking to our shared humanity.

The How We Are Connected Photo Exploration Project (THWACPEP) is my cultural exploration through photography. The project currently features theatrical portraits of over 100 cultural performers dressed in their traditional attire. Moving forward, I will document performances and travel to annual cultural festivals—particularly across East Africa—to capture portraits, interviews, and stories that highlight the beauty, diversity, and connections within our global heritage.

This work is not only about documentation—it is about preservation, celebration, and connection. Through these images, I aim to inspire audiences to explore their roots, honor traditions, and see the unity in our diversity.
